JUDO STAMP OF THE MONTH Go to
the Stamp List and click onto the letter for the country whose stamps
you seek. Countries are alphabetized. |
MISCELLANEOUS ITEM OF THE MONTH This Belgian stamp, which is to the right, has a judo vignette attached. Vignettes have no postal value. Look in the Miscellaneous section for unusual judo and Other Martial Arts items. |
Welcome to the world's greatest collection of judo stamps,
coins, and phone cards! Without a single recorded injury, judo stamp
collecting has to be the safest judo-related activity of all, safer even than kata judging and refereeing. Now it
is even easier to learn more about
this non-vigorous aspect of our sport. I offer the Judo Stamp, Coin, and Telephone Card Lists to assist
you. In return I ask that you inform me about omissions and errors.
Not all images are actual size.
The Coin List
is near the bottom.
Some African nations didn't hear about judo's exclusion from the 1968 Olympics. Chad, Gabon, Senegal, Togo, and Yemen Arab Republic issued stamps commemorating the judo that never happened. Gabon even issued a First Day Cover showing tai-otoshi both on the stamp and on the envelope, with Jeux Olympiques De Mexico 1968 printed just below the image.
The United States won a gold medal in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. That's what an attractive Maldives stamp says. It was news to me, too. The stamp credits Frank Wieneke of the USA with a Gold Medal. This hiki-komi-gaeshi stamp is an overprint of one issued before the Olympics. After Frank's triumph, the Maldives hurriedly announced his gold medal win for America. Producing overprints allows a post office to reissue a stamp, selling more of the existing design. They were wrong. Frank Wieneke fought for West Germany.
Unlike referees, whose seamless perfection we all admire, the creators of judo stamps make mistakes. Mismatches between athlete and country, as above, and judo stamps for the Olympics in Mexico (which included no judo) are prime examples. It seems nobody informed the mints of Gabon, Senegal, and Togo, three African nations, that Mexico did not offer judo at its Olympics. Some stamps show impossible techniques. Others don't resemble judo at all. Names are misspelled: Anton Geesink becomes Geesinck on an Ajman issue, and Sainobu Sekine becomes Shinodu on a Central African Republic stamp -- and Saindu on one from Sharjah. Other errors, such as the + 2 B with a skull on the Yemen stamp, are not so obvious and do not involve judo.
Umm al Quiwain (find this one on your map!) is the only country that has issued a 3-D judo stamp. The attractive, three-dimensional airmail issue is a 1-riyal stamp. Umm al Quiwain, an emirate of 100-square-miles, population 5,000, is part of the United Arab Emirates.
Ajman issued a double-image stamp that shows boxers slugging it out. Seen at an angle, it shows judo. Well, both are combative arts, anyway. It might have showed synchronized swimming instead! North Korea has issued the most judo stamps, followed by Ajman and then Senegal and Mongolia. Guinea Bissau, Kazakhstan, and Cuba have issued many too. Ajman, a 100-square-mile emirate, the same size as Umm al Quiwain and also part of the United Arab Emirates, is home to 6,000 people. Either judo is very popular there or the government milks judo stamp collectors for revenue.
Monaco's harai-goshi stamp commemorating the 1964 Tokyo Olympics was over a quarter century ahead of its time, for the competitors are in colored judogi -- one red, one green. Now that the International Judo Federation specifies blue judogi for tournaments, this colorful stamp is less unusual. Players on stamps of other countries wear yellow (Costa Rica; Peoples' Republic of Congo), black (Bhutan), red (Liechtenstein), and orange (Liechtenstein). An article addresses Designer Judogi Colors.
Canada's judo stamp, celebrating the 1976 Montreal Olympics, is interesting: even when inverted, the technique looks good. The stamp issued by the Federal Republic of Germany looks good upside down, too. Its players, commemorating the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, wear topknots. Their features resemble samurai in the woodblock prints known as ukioye.
In 1991, Antigua and Barbuda issued a colorful four-stamp set that showed judo (Mickey Mouse throwing Donald Duck) as well as aikido, kung-fu, and sumo. Because the International Judo Federation permits only same-sex pairs for competition, mixed species in judo seems strange. With a brick-wall background, this stamp may represent a practice session rather than competition. The throw Mickey uses to deck the duck is hard to identify, but it is not a Mickey-komi technique! (Judo: Sport for All Species addresses mixed-species judo competition.)
Collecting -- Many lesser nations issue judo stamps. The United States has never issued one. The closest America has come was an aerogramme (an air letter with a printed stamp) whose reverse shows several sports, including judo, to commemorate the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. America also had a cancellation mark for judo at this event as well as a postcard with an eagle mascot in a judogi and black belt.
Some stamps feature judo with logos or sketches not even resembling judo. Others show multiple sports. One from Monaco shows athletes jumbled in a pile, with judoka on the left center of the heap. Some stamps cram everything together -- flags, Olympic rings, spacecraft, maps, and so forth, in order to appeal to more of those who collect stamps on specific topics. Hungary issued a stamp featuring a satellite surrounded by logos of 18 Olympic sports (including judo); Olympic rings; and the Canadian flag for the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Although the logos are the size of a pencil eraser, if you collect flag stamps, you need this one. Collectors of space stamps will want it too. So will collectors of Olympic rings. They will buy this stamp even though it is unattractive.
I generally buy stamps new in a set. I don't like doing this, but usually it is the only way I can get them. Later I may find the same item in cancelled form at a fraction of the cost. With this list as a guide, you may wish to look for them yourself before sending your Want List to a topical stamp company.
This Stamp List includes data on over 1,500 stamps and variations. The American Topical Association lists far fewer. You may wish to collect one of each, or perhaps you want both mint NH (never hinged) and canceled examples and minor variations. After Judo Stamps comes a sampling of Other Martial Arts Stamps. There are more than I can display, so I have included the most interesting, listed according to martial art rather than by country.
Cancellation marks interest many collectors. These are after the Stamp List. Special thanks to Piet Van Hool of Belgium for sharing his extensive collection and data and to Frank Dresselaerts, also of Belgium, for contributing most of the First Day Covers.
First Day Covers are envelopes commemorating a special event. Some have judo pictures and judo stamps. The cancellation mark may itself represent judo, making some FDCs a triple treat -- judo picture, judo cancellation, and judo stamp -- for collectors of judo commemoratives. I list sample FDCs of Other Martial Arts after Judo FDCs.
Miscellaneous items include Preprinted Cards and Envelopes as well as judo match boxes, cigar bands, and beer coasters. Many preprinted cards and envelopes have judo stamps and/or judo cancellation marks. Five years ago when I revisited the Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo, my alma mater, I discovered Kodokan cigarette lighters in their gift shop. I find it odd that the world's foremost judo school encourages smoking. I have always considered smoking unhealthy.
I list Judo Phonecards and a sampling of Other Martial Arts Phonecards by art rather than by country. Judo phone cards, often called telecards, are popular in Europe as well as Japan. They even work for non-judo telephone calls. One from Japan shows a judoka throwing a huge bowl of soba or ramen noodles into the air with tomoe-nage. I hate throwing away food! Another has squids in judogi battling it out, one wearing a black belt. The other's belt is obscured by lots of legs. A card from Israel depicts osae-komi during shiai, with the player on top putting his hand in his opponent's face while the referee scores yuko. Tori meantime talks on a corded telephone in his free hand.
Some judo stamps from Mauritania have been fraudulently reproduced and sold. These items are included as well.
Coin information introduces Judo Coins and a sampling of coins of Other Martial Arts.
How to Find Judo Stamps -- To immediately increase your collection, mail a copy of this stamp list to any of several topical mail order places, first deleting any you already have. (Allow plenty of time and paper, as this is the world's most comprehensive listing of judo and other martial arts stamps, coins, and telephone cards!) Mail order suppliers will find many stamps for you at reasonable costs. In this manner I significantly increased my collection. The average cost of each stamp was about US$2. I could return any I did not want, already had, or thought too costly. Bear in mind that many items on this list will be difficult even for dealers to find.
For several years I have enjoyed doing business with County Stamp Center. They post new listings and illustrations and offer you the option to list stamps you want. County Stamp Center even sends lists by email. EBay is another internet source for judo stamps, coins, and telephone cards.
The problem with most lists and websites is that countries issuing sports stamps often tout them as "Sydney Olympics -- boxing, wrestling, etc.," making it impossible to tell the collection includes judo. Occasionally lists specify a judo stamp in a set or rarely, a single judo stamp. County Stamp Center offers a system whereby they wait until they have a judo stamp order totaling $10 or more before sending it. In this way I receive most new issues.
In the rare case that but one judo stamp might be available, I get it, since I hold nidan rank in judo stamp collecting and thereby outrank all other collectors! I also hold shodan rank in judo stamp photography. (I state this for humorous purposes only!)
Because more often than not a judo stamp is part of a set, you'll be forced to purchase others. Trade, give away, or collect these, because you'll accumulate quite a few. The way to get around having to buy an entire set is to become a hunter. Often you can find a judo stamp by itself, outside a set, at a stamp show or shop, occasionally in cancelled condition. The price always will be less than buying it in a set. When you hunt for judo stamps, take this list. It will prove invaluable.
You can find out about stamp shows, where dealers and big-time collectors offer philatelic material on tables, from Linn's Stamp News. Linn's, available in most libraries, lists show dates and locations throughout the country.
Most dealers do not arrange their stock by topic. If you locate one, focus on "Sports" and "Olympics" categories. Before I complied this list, I would be stopped dead in my tracks whenever a dealer would ask me for catalog numbers of stamps I wanted. Now I can hand the dealer a copy of this list and put much of the hunting effort into his or her hands.
Some dealers have stock books of unsorted stamps selling for 10¢ or 15¢ apiece. When you get good at this, you'll be able to spot judo stamps quickly. Haunting shops can be tough, involving long trips through strange towns in search of shops that may have nothing you want. Calling ahead to ask if they have topical arrangements or large recent foreign issues can help, especially if you don't know your way around town, are limited on time, and must choose from among several shops. Steer clear of tables or shops specializing in early issues, say before 1970. Most judo stamps were born after then. Shops are listed in phone book yellow pages under "Stamps for Collectors." When I find duplicates of attractive stamps that cost $1 or less, I buy them to trade with other collectors or give to my judo students and friends.
Reference Numbers and Terms -- Wherever possible I have provided multiple numbers representing different systems. Numbers for newer issues are hard to obtain and consequently may not be indicated. In cases where cross-referencing produced numbers that did not match, I included all numbers. I have listed variations separately, beneath stamps they emulate. First comes the stamp, then the imperforate and/or souvenir sheet or bloc or sheetlet.
The U.S. and Canada use predominantly Scott numbers, while Michel and Yvert and Tellier numbers are popular in Europe. Piet Van Hool of Belgium provided most reference numbers and images of stamps from his extensive collection.

Identifying the Techniques -- Tomoe-nage may be the most popular throw on stamps. Uchi-mata is also common. At judo camps throughout the country, experienced judoka and I, sometimes with a magnifying glass, would attempt to identify techniques. Though often we cannot agree, we do agree about the beauty of the stamps. Many techniques remain unidentified. If you are fairly certain of the name of a technique in such cases, or if the technique is incorrectly described, please contact me.
Photographing and Scanning -- A 2-x macro-converter lens works great for taking pictures of your stamps and coins to enjoy or frame. Squinting through a magnifying glass is not the easiest way to view them. Natural light works best, but beware of breezes that blow away stamps and sunlight that curls them. Anchor stamps before photographing.
Computer scanning produces more faithful reproductions. Be aware that many stamps light up under UV light, some significantly. For example, Brazil's 5.20-cruzeiros stamp (Scott # 1437/MI # 1531/YT # 1194) yellows appreciably under UV long-wave and also short-wave. Short-waves do not pass through a plastic cover. UV long-wave has a wavelength of 3660 angstroms, while UV short-wave has a wavelength of 2537 angstroms. Some stamps turn different colors after they have been removed from the envelope. Perhaps adhesive intrudes into the stamp. Because adhesive is most often fluorescent, it is best to scan unused stamps for optimum color reproduction.
Compiling the Stamp List -- This list is the product of three decades of compiling information. In the early years friends mailed me Xeroxed copies of their collections, which widened my search. I bought lists from the American Topical Association, although the ATA does not update its list each year. This Judo Stamp List includes more accurate data on more stamps, with more technical details.
Due to website limitations, some images do not appear their actual size. Several are larger than actual size. Sometimes when a stamp appears in multiple forms, such as stamp, imperforate, souvenir sheet, and imperforate souvenir sheet, I have reduced the size of subsequent images. Several listings have no value and technically are not stamps but vignettes, valueless attachments to stamps. Pictures or logos on some souvenir sheets and First Day Covers may be on the border and not on the stamp itself. Stamps are ordered alphabetically and cross-referenced by country (with various spellings), then by denomination. Vignettes are included in the Miscellaneous section. The date at the top of the Stamp List indicates the most recent updating.
Other Martial Arts -- My own collection includes material from Other Martial Arts, especially when it is inexpensive. I don't bother with costly stamp items and coins, devoting my energy towards judo stamps. Judo stamps outnumber all others in the martial arts category, with taekwondo a distant second. This is understandable, because judo has been an Olympic sport since 1964.
Though THIS Stamp List includes quite a few taekwondo stamps (in the Other Martial Arts category), I attempt to show only the most interesting and beautiful items as a sample. Now that taekwondo is an Olympic sport, as has been judo since 1964, we will see more issues of taekwondo stamps.
There even are ninja stamps, one depicting a happy ninja with a shuriken (throwing star) in her hand. Stamp collectors want Olympic issues, so demand is there. Governments around the world, with the exception of the United States, recognize this as a means for revenue.
Copyrights -- Several have asked whether images on stamps are copyrighted. I have been informed that, as foreign stamps, they are in the public domain. U.S. stamps, however, are copyrighted. I was also advised that Disney stamps are protected by international copyright, which would preclude using designs from the Antigua and Barbuda martial arts set on T-shirts.
Judo Coins -- Some are stunningly beautiful. They are from Australia, the Republic of Korea, the USSR, Cuba, Fiji, the Isle of Man, Mongolia, and Tonga. The Soviet coin, in my estimation the most beautiful, is 90% silver and commemorates the 1980 Moscow Olympics. It was issued in a set with 13 others, so you must find it alone or it will be expensive. Tonga's coin depicts a judoka kicking at another, over the word JUDO. The Tonga mint needs a judoka on its advisory staff!
Australia has issued the most variety in judo coins, 3 different ones to date, plus two tokens. The Isle of Man has the most issues of the same image using different metals. The judo on this coin is very small indeed.
Because coins are minted in different metals, costs vary enormously. Most collectors will be satisfied with one of each type. If you have a yen (¥) for a complete collection, you may want to sell your home to finance your hobby -- gold and platinum coins are expensive! An Australian company provided me with much information about Australian coins. Coin offerings also are on eBay, where I located a Cuban coin.
Information about judo coins follows this Stamp List. You may click directly to The Coin List through the index above. If you have martial arts coins not on the Coin List that you can scan, preferably as jpg files, send them to me. An article about judo coins is in the articles section.
Keeping the List Current -- Inform me of omissions and errors. Please send scans of missing items. JPG format works best. Contact information is at the very end.
